Hey Hey and a Big G'Day toya,
Experience old and new China in Wenzhou and the Nanxi River villages
The city of Wenzhou has become a Chinese business hub, but making a deal isn't the only reason to visit the city. Wenzhou and the surrounding region have a lot to offer travelers on China tours.
Located on China's east coast, Wenzhou is both a seaside and river city. With its pagodas and footbridges, Jiangxin Island, in the Ou River, offers a picture postcard experience of China. The Manguo Temple, a Tang Dynasty shrine, is another historical attraction.
While Wenzhou is a bustling, industrial city, the nearby Nanxi River Valley is some of the most famously beautiful countryside in China, serving as the inspiration for 4th century writer Xie Lingyun's landscape poems. Travelers can embark on a river tour from Oubei Town, about 14 miles from the city center of Wenzhou.
Bamboo rafts offer an idyllic means of travel down the Nanxi. The river's water is extremely clear and reflects the greenery on the shore. Cangpo and Furong are among the many charming villages along the river's winding, 93-mile course. These small villages, supported by fishing and logging, have thrived since ancient times, and visitors can sample the day's catch prepared in traditional style.
