The Wonderful Yangcun Village Adventure

Hey Hey and a Big G'Day Toya,

When travelling its sometimes good to get some rain. It allows one to actually stop trying to fit as much into the each day as possible.

For the last four mornings I've woken to rain and usually the best thing to do is to simply roll over, close your eyes and not worry about another wasted day, thankfully though today when I woke a few hours later it had slowed down to a mere drizzle.

Today's destination was Yangcun Village. Well actually it was yesterdays and several days priors destination.

In the Yangcun area can be found a number of decaying old fortified villages and what I visited today was the three hundred and fifty year old Yanyi Wei building and at four story's it is the tallest residence in the county that once housed several hundred but now only around fifty people.

Though the LP write is correct when describing it as 'not as impressive as the Guangxi New Fort' but it is its shere size that brings it much closer to its family members in Fujian Province. In fact I wasn't expecting it to be as large as it was as it dwarfed those much smaller forts around it and it is also a perfect example of what Hakka villages have become.

There is supposed to be a fifteen Yuan entry fee but for some reason the proud elderly couple that showed me around wouldn't accept it. Normally you don't get granted access to the top level so today it was so awesome to walk around within the 'battle walls' where once the residence would looked down upon their enemy.

Yanyi Wei

The complex of Yanyi Wei, in Yangcun village, is the tallest fortified farmhouse in southern Jiangxi. The rectangular house built in 1650, it is four stories high, nearly fifteen meters tall and has almost two meter thick walls. There are thirty four rooms on each story of the building and all connected by a single wooden corridor and the only entrance to the complex has three gates. As with most Wei, the structure projects both a sense of internal community along with a sense of defensiveness to the outside world.

Wushi Wei

Built nearly four hundred years ago, this complex in Yangcun village is one of the earliest fortified farmhouses in the region. Among the region's fine examples of fortified farmhouses, it is the closest to the round type found in Fujian Province. Constructed as a relatively wide half circle of two story room houses, it has a cluster of ancestral halls in the center. In front of the entrance is a pond, also in semi-circular shape. This architectural style is similar to that of buildings in the Meizhou area of Guangdong.

The complex, named after a big black stone (wushi) in front of the house, is famous for being the home of more than nineteen successful candidates in the highest imperial examinations held in the palace during the Ming and Qing (1368-1911) dynasties.
