A Snowy End of Year School Performance

Hey Hey and a Big G'Day toya,

Well wasn’t that a riot! I mean in the literal sense. That’s the end of teaching for 2012.

My classes ended Thursday afternoon and Friday the students switched between having normal classes and rehearsing for their End of Year school performances. Last night was my Primary Students turn on the stage and they were beyond full of confidence and colour and even though it was nearing zero degrees with no heating and with all the hall windows and doors open they put on a most spectacular performance.

Today I was going to visit my Middle School students while they rehearsed.

That was until I woke to a white winter wonderland, upon which I shunned and turned my back. Friends and family and many of you who read my blog should know how much I loathe this picture perfect horribly useless stuff called snow. Load it all onto big dump trucks and take it to desert villages or just drop it off at the front door of all those that go all goo goo & gar gar over it.

What if it continues to snow tomorrow and the next day and even the next? I don’t teach again until Wednesday so how and what will I eat?

I’m not going out there, there’s lots of snow and people die in the snow with all those blizzards and avalanches and all that other horrible stuff you see on the TV. Haven’t you seen that horror movie when Frosty went crazy with a machete and ripped apart an entire town and its people?

Do I need to carry a wok around as a shield for protection? Tonight it was my Middle School students time to shine and shine they did but not in the way I expected.

I expected colour and entertainment like last night but what I got was a rather dull…well no…it wasn’t dull as I actually had a really good time moving around the hall sitting with my different students so I guess, there just wasn’t any colour or excitement. Tonight’s performance was judged on a choir based atmosphere which like many of the ones I’ve seen in the past is kind of a waste of time as the backing music is always louder so the audience never really gets to hear the singing.

Tonight though they did shine but not so much on stage!

Inside we were all freezing and sitting with numb ears, nose, hands, feet and heads really isn’t something that an entire hall full of young teens will accept. It started off small and quiet and I’d see things flying through the air and sometimes I or those around me would get hit in the back of the head etc with a small slither of ice. I could see teachers around the hall getting angry, pointing to groups of students and yelling and from there it kind of escalated into a near riot, but a fun riot. As each class ascended and descended the stage the snow balls being snuck into the hall grew in size. At first they were being chipped away and shreds of ice were being thrown around but not long after snow balls the size of human heads were being thrown and almost the entire hall went crazy.

Thankfully adult anger quickly turned to laughter and the students were allowed total freedom to be and act as actual teenagers and not Chinese students which was the perfect end to the year 2012 for the students!
