Rope River Villages & Hanging Temple Adventures

Hey Hey and a Big G'Day toya,

Allen Maaaate, it was awesome seeing you again. Huge thanks for the Beers N Noodles and all the rides. That’s one hell of a damn beautiful city your got there buddy!

Situated in the northwestern region of the Guangxi Autonomous Region amongst the range of stunning karst formations that covers southern China can be found tiny Yizhou city. As Guilin city and Yangshuo town are only several hours away, foreign tourists rarely visit and if for some reason you choose to visit after Guilin and Yangshuo, don’t expect to find tourist infrastructure.

But for those like me who love travelling off the beaten tracks then it is a great place to start.

The main reason to come to Yizhou is to see the scenic karst formations in the countryside and if you are in to dams then there is also a stone dam dating from the Qing Dynasty. There 'are’ several ‘tourist’ areas and from what I’ve read if you hire and raft along the river there are several very large water wheels to see that are still in use along with many karst caves. If you want to stay several days, other than the above, why not purchase an extremely inexpensive bike and head out into the countryside where you will find ethnic minority farmers (usually Zhuang) farming rice, sugar cane and breeding silk worms. In the center of the city is a statue of the legendary Song Dynasty singer Liu Sanjie as the locals believe that Liu was born there.

The Story of Liu & The Yangshuo Liu Sanjie Show on Li River

The now famous Liu Sanjie show in Yangshuo had its premier in 2004 and is supposed to be the biggest natural stage in the world. The Liu Sanjie show was created by Zhang Yimao, who has also created and choreographed the opening ceremony for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and directed such famous Chinese movies as Raise the Red Lantern.

Liu Sanjie is located about two kilometers from West Street and the show is performed on the waters of Li River and its surroundings. Twelve karst formations are lit up, utilizing the wonders of nature to form the backdrop to the stage. The performance can look different each time as mist, rain and moonlight naturally alter the set of the stage. Over six hundred locals who are mainly farmers, fisherman and youngsters perform and sing to often over a ten thousand strong audience.

Retelling the History of the Li River Show

Liu Sanjie (The Third Sister of the Liu Family) is a legend of the Zhuang people. The Zhuang Minority People are one of the fifty six ethnic groups in China and, with a population of fifteen million, is second only to the Han people, who account for more than 91 percent of the nation's total population of over a billion. The story of Liu Sanjie became known throughout the country thanks to a famous movie, produced in color in 1961. An instant hit, the movie also helped spread the legend to the entire Southeast Asia.

The Zhuang people believe that the legendary Liu Sanjie was born in Middle Jian Village on the Lower Jian River at the foot of the Lower Jian Mountain in Yizhou Town in the Guangxi Autonomous Region. Her original name is said to be Liu Shanhua. Since she was the third child of her family, she was given the nickname of "Liu Sanjie," meaning "Sister No. 3 of the Liu Family." An incarnation of a lark, as the Zhuang people so believe, Sanjie started speaking eloquently when she was only one. At the age of three, she already had a melodious voice. In her teens, she was regarded as the top singer of folk songs (songs in an antiphonal style) which is typical of the ethnic people in South China. Coveting her beauty and talent, a local tyrant named Mo Huairen wanted to have her as his concubine. Rejected, the angry Mo plotted to murder her but with the help of her boy friend and fellow villagers, she managed to escape. The two lovers traveled as they sang, and eventually found their ultimate freedom by turning themselves into a pair of larks.

Today, the people of Yizhou Town claim that they still possess some of her relics, such as a shoulder pole in the crevice of a cliff, a spot she frequented to do her laundry, and a site where she purportedly beat the local despot and his hired singers in a dramatic song contest.

The legend of Liu Sanjie was originally an oral tradition and later found itself in romance, drama scripts, and county annals in Guangxi. Studies show that the legend is not exclusively of the Zhuang people. Its spread turns out to be more ethnically and geographically diversified. For, similar stories can be found among the Miao, Yao, Buyi, Mulao and Han ethnic populations in Guangdong, Hunan, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces as well.
